Interview with Alexis Roussel – COO of NYM – AIBC Summit Dubai
Tell us what Nym does?
We are building a privacy network. Today, we believe that the internet is not anonymous enough. When you communicate data on the internet, a lot of metadata is disclosed: your IP address, where you came from, who you were talking to. All this data is therefore very valuable and can be protected. So we build a privacy network, a mixnet, which mixes your traffic so that observers, people who are trying to observe the network, are not able to know who you are talking to.
What is the difference with a VPN?
A VPN is a server that represents you on the Internet. It is therefore easy to find the IP address of this VPN. With Nym, traffic is distributed through a mixnet and each packet is sent through a different route. It is therefore impossible to determine which packets are yours, unlike a VPN, where all traffic between your computer and the VPN is personal.
How important is it for a company to have this kind of security, especially when operating in blockchain terms?
If you’re a bank, a broker or a dealer, you interact a lot with the nodes, with the crypto-currencies. And in fact, all the traffic, the spread of the transaction can reveal a lot about you. So it’s possible for blockchain analysis companies to correlate based on where you broadcast your transactions. The idea is that all the transactions that are going to be broadcast can be broadcast by Nym and then decorrelated from who is sending them. In this way, Nym wants to reduce the digital footprint of a broker or an exchange, for example.
